Historic Inns and B&Bs

You can't get more charm, history and entertainment in one guesthouse than at La Te Da at the upper end of Duval.

Cuban Patriot Jose Marti Spoke
from the Second Floor Balcony

Originally the family home of Teodoro Perez's family, Cuban Patriot Jose Marti visited the house several times in the late 1800s and delivered a famous address to cheering crowds from its second floor balcony. During these visits Marti curried support from Key West's Cuban exile community for the Cuban Revolutionary Party, a movement that led to Cuba's independence in 1902. In Marti's honor the house was christened La Terraza de Marti (The Terrace of Marti), and later shortened to La Te Da.
Today La Te Da is not only a popular Bed & Breakfast, but a veritable Key West attraction and entertainment complex. It boasts an excellent restaurant, several lively bars, including a popular piano bar, a social pool scene, and its Crystal Room, a New York style caberet known for a stellar line up – from renowned female impersonators singing live to headline Broadway stars and comedians. If a smaller, quieter setting is your style, the Key West Palm Court offers lovely guest accommodations in an old conch house built in 1884 by a sea captain. There is a guest suite that sleeps three and cottage that sleeps 4. Both have kitchens and access to a delightful pool in a tropical garden. The accommodations are just two blocks from Duval Street in Old Town.

The Conch House Heritage Inn is a charming bed and breakfast owned by descendants of the family that first made this house a home. Choose your accommodations from spacious bedrooms in the main house, furnished with elegant antiques, the Caribbean-style wicker rooms in the poolside cottage, or the cozy poolside cabana.

The Cypress House Bed & Breakfast is just one block from Duval. Built in 1888, this "Grand Conch mansion" is a typical example of Bahamian architecture in Key West. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the historic Cypress maintains the atmosphere of a 19th century island residence.

The Curry Mansion is one of Key West's most beautiful Victorian homes. The home and the adjacent inn offer fine accommodations in Old Town. Guest amenities include a full deluxe breakfast, daily open bar cocktail parties and full access to the 22-room mansion built by Florida's first millionaire family. The home, which is filled with fine period furnishings, is also open for museum tours to non-guests.

For fanciful architecture, the Southernmost House is a colorful delight. The home has undergone several changes from private residence to a Cuban Night Club in the 1930s, back to a residence in 1954, in later years to a museum and beach club. The 1896 mansion is now an oceanfront bed and breakfast at the top of Duval Street. Its exterior colors are true to its original state and the furnishings are of the period. The property also hosts a significant collection of US presidential signatures.

Key West Hotels

One of Key West's oldest hotels is the Eden House. Built in 1924 on a quiet street just a short walk from Duval, the Art Deco hotel gained fame as the setting for the 1990 flick, Criss Cross, starring Goldie Hawn.

The boutique hotel offers a full range of accommodation from deluxe apartment suites to affordable semi-private rooms, and everything in between. Amenities include a heated pool, Jacuzzi, elevated sundeck, hammocks, swings, a garden cafe, wi-fi Internet, and friendly service - all in a lush garden setting with a touch of stylish jazz.

Fairfield Inn Pool
Relax poolside after a day of play.

If the comfort and ease of a well-known chain is your idea of a perfect lodging, then look no further than the newly renovated Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott. The hotel is conveniently located in the center of Key West, just minutes from the beaches, Old Town and all of the attractions. Dip in the refreshing, oversized pool after a day of touring Key West, and snooze in comfort on pillow top mattresses.

No guide to Key West lodging would be complete without a nod to the Casa Marina. The picturesque, Mediterranean architecture, the 1,000 foot sandy beach, the quiet neighborhood location, and the resort's integral role in Key West history put this resort on every Key West map.

The original building, completed in 1920, was built to accommodate the wealthy travelers who rose the new Flagler railroad spanning the island chain from the mainland to Key West. Two decades later the US Navy purchased the building to house officers during WWII. The Casa Marina was reborn again as a hotel in the 1950s and a recent $43 million renovation restored the resort property to its early grandeur.

If you prefer to stay in the midst of all the action of Duval Street, The Southern Cross Hotel is the Key West hotel for you. They offer single rooms to penthouse suites with balconies having treetop views or overlooking all the action on Key West's most famous street.
